HENRY M. GUTTORMSON

Feb 10, 1893 – Aug 6, 1918

 

The Lanesboro American Legion Post #40 was named for Henry M. Guttormson in 1919.  Henry M Guttormson was born Feb 10, 1893 to Mr and Mrs Guttorm O Guttormson in Lanesboro, MN.  He entered the service September 22, 1917 as a Private with Co 11, 1st Inf Trng Reg AEF.  He arrived in Europe in late June of 1918 and was sent to the front three weeks later.  He actively engaged in early fighting at Chauteau Thierry and was killed in action near Aisne River August 6, 1918.  He is buried in the American Cemetery near Romagne France.

GEORGE A GULBRANDSEN

Oct 8, 1893 – Apr 19, 1948

 

 

Entered the service on Feb 24, 1918 as a Corporal assigned to the 88th Infantry Division and went overseas in August 1918. He was mustered out in July 1919.  Buried at the Lanesboro Cemetery.

CARROLL C JACOBSON

Feb 19, 1895 – Oct 5, 1951

 

 

Entered the service in February 25, 1918 and was a 2Lt with Company M, 351 Infantry Division with the Army of Occupation.  He was mustered out in 1919.  Buried in Canton, SD.

Oct 1, 1894 – Unknown

 

 

Entered the service May 8, 1918 and was a Sgt in the Intermediate Ordinance Depot No. 5 in Issoudun, France.  He was mustered out in 1919.  No further history is available.

Served in both WW I and WW II.  He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.  Buried at Ft Snelling National Cemetery.

MSGR LEO M DEVLIN

Oct 11, 1891 – 1975

 

 

Ordained a priest March 24, 1917 and served in the Winona Diocese for 58 years.  Served as an Army Chaplain during WW I and a state chaplain of the MN National Guard in the 1930’s.  He was an American Legion member for 57 years and a charter member of the Lanesboro Post.  Buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Served in WW I.  He was a 52 year member of the American Legion.  Buried in the Lenora Cemetery with military rites by the Lanesboro American Legion Post 40.

Feb 1, 1892 – Mar 26, 1952

 

 

Entered the service October 29, 1917 and was a Sgt Chauffeur 1st Class with the 25th Bn Co, A.E.F.  He served at St Mihiel and Toul sectors.  Was mustered out July 2, 1919.  Buried in Lanesboro.

HENRY S 'HEINIE' HOFF

Jan 20, 1894 – May 29, 1991

 

 

Served with the 5th Field Signal Bn in February 1918 in France and received the Purple Heart for duty in Argonne Forest.  He was a charter member of the American Legion, Disabled Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW.  Buried in the Lanesboro Cemetery with military gravesite rites.

Served in WW I as a Private in the 38th Division of the Field Artillery overseas.  Was mustered out in January 1919.  Buried in the Bethlehem Church Cemetery.

Aug 19, 1893 - Jun 29,1955

 

 

Served in WW I as a Private in France.  Was mustered out in July 1919.  Buried at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.  At the time of his funeral, businesses in Lanesboro were closed for 2 hours.

A veteran of World War I.  Active in the American Legion as a 50 year member.  The date of his death is unknown.

CARL A LODAHL

Oct 30, 1888 – May 29, 1962

 

 

Was in WW I and served with the 91st Infantry Division in France and Flanders.  He left the military May 1919.  Buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Served in WW I.  Buried in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Minneapolis.

Served in WW I.  Died around 1980 and is buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

JOHN HOWARD 'DUFFY' LEWIS

Apr 6, 1889 – May 10, 1993

 

 

Entered the service in 1917 and served as a Private in France. Was mustered out in June 3, 1919.  Also served in WW II.  An active member of the American Legion and VFW.  He had a memorial service at St Patrick’s Catholic Church and his body was donated to Mayo Foundation for research.

HELMER KOLSTAD

Oct 28, 1888 – Jul 10, 1978

 

 

Served as a Private, Co H, 34th Infantry, A.E.F. and arrived overseas August 16, 1918 where he saw service in St. Mihiel and the Army of Occupation in Germany.  Was mustered out June 26, 1919.  Buried in the Lanesboro Cemetery.

Mar 6, 1894 – Dec 5, 1991

 

 

Entered the service April 9, 1918 and served as a cook with Battery A, 12th F.A.R.D. at Camp Jackson, SC.  Was mustered out February 18, 1919.  Buried at the Whalan Lutheran Church.  The American Legion of Whalen conducted services.

Entered the service in May 1918 and was a Private in the Infantry.  Was mustered out in 1919.  Was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.  Buried at the Henrytown Lutheran Church Cemetery.

EDWIN O DAVIDSON

Sep 39, 1889 – Mar 2, 1959

 

 

Entered the service September 6, 1918 as a Private, Machine Gun Trng Co at Camp Hancock, GA.  His unit was scheduled to go to Germany but was struck with a flu epidemic and the war ended before they could serve.  Was mustered out February 18, 1919.  Along with being Commander of Post 40, he was also the first Commander of Whalan’s Post 167.  Buried in Whalan and received full military rites by both the Whalan and Lanesboro American Legions.

May 26, 1919 – Feb 17, 2015

 

 

Enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 5, 1941 and was commissioned a 2Lt on June 13, 1942 and served in WW II.  Was discharged as a Captain in 1950.  Was a member of the American Legion and a life member of VFW.  Buried at Lanesboro Cemetery.  Military rites by the American Legion of Lanesboro

Served in WWII with the 3d Marine Division.  Was based in Guam and served in Iwo Jima.  Buried at Elstad Church Cemetery.

Jun 28, 1916 – Aug 8, 1998

 

 

Volunteered for one year of service and was inducted into the Army March 25, 1941. Served in Italy with the Prisoner of War Adminstration, Co 2613.  Was discharged December 9, 1945.  Buried in the Lanesboro Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion.

LEROY 'ERIC' ERICKSON

Apr 15, 1924 – Apr 28, 2008

 

 

Enlisted in the US Army Air force, December 6, 1942 where he graduated as a bombardier.  Based in Italy with the 15th Air Force, 460th Bomb Group, 760th Sqdrn.  Flew 57 missions and was awarded the DFC, 7 Air medals, other citations and theaters of operations ribbons.  Was discharged in 1946.  Buried in Lanesboro Cemetery, with military rites by the Lanesboro American Legion.

PAUL AHLERT EVENSON

May 24, 1913 – Nov 15, 1999

 

 

Drafted June 1, 1942 and assigned to Army Air Corps.  Went to radio school, aerial gunnery school and was a Radio Gunner on a B-26 bomber.  Then reassigned to a B-17, was credited with 51 missions in the European Theater.  He received an Air Medal with 9 clusters.  Discharged May of 1945 on the point system.

Served 4 ½ years in the Army during WWII with the rank of Captain.  Active in the community with the American Legion.  Buried at Ft Snelling National Cemetery.

Drafted into the Army and served from 1945 to 1946.  He served in Korea with the Utility Engineers.  Discharged as a Sgt. December 25, 1946.  Buried in Lanesboro Cemetery with the Lanesboro American Legion conducting the graveside services.

Joined the US Marine Corps in 1943 and served in the South Pacific with the 6th Marine Corps.  Was a second lieutenant and a cook.  Discharged in 1946.  Buried in the Lanesboro Cemetery, with military honors by the Lanesboro American Legion.

Enlisted in the US Navy in December 1944 and served on Guam and aboard the destroyer USS Perry.  Discharged in February 1948.  Was a member of the Amvets and VFW. Buried at the Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, IA.

Served with the Air Corps for 5 years during WWII.  Discharged in 1946.  Died in 1973 while serving as the Chaplain for the American Legion.  Buried at the Union Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Served in the Army from 1942 until 1946.  Was active with the Legion Post 40 and was a former 1st District Vice Commander of the American Legion.  Buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

DARRYL NORTHOUSE

Feb 12, 1925 – Mar 24, 2010

 

 

Entered the Navy, June 22, 1943.  He spent 2 years in the South Pacific with Argus 18.  Finished his duty on LST in Japan and was discharged in April 1946.  He has been with the American Legion for 50 years and also served at Post Commander of Post 68 in Spring Valley.

Entered the Army Air Corps, October 11, 1948 and served for three years.  At the time of his discharge President Truman extended all enlistments to 1 year so he was discharged August 11, 1952 as a Technical Sergeant.  Took over as commander to finish his father-in-law’s term when Peter Fox died. Buried in the Lanesboro Cemetery with military honors by Lanesboro American Legion Post No. 40

ORLANDO T JOHNSON

Sep 22, 1923 – 1972

 

 

Served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and saw action at Cape Gloucaster, New Guinea Pelelieu Palau Islands and Okinawa where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.  Was active in the American Legion Post #40 and the Lanesboro VFW.  Buried at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945.  In addition to being the Commander of the Lanesboro American Legion, he also served as County Commander and Area I Vice Commander for the state.  Buried at the First Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and served during the Korean War.  Discharged from the service in 1952.

Drafted into the Army on February 26, 1945 and served in the Infantry, Military Police, engineers and was a Cook’s Helper.  He was in the Philippines from August 1945 to February 1946.  He received the Good Conduct and Asiatic Pacific Theatre service medals.  Discharged from the service on February 23, 1946.

Drafted during the Korean Conflict.  After taking Basic Training at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, he was stationed at Camp LeLoy Johnson in New Orleans, LA.  Discharged in 1955.  He is a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 40.

RICHARD 'DICK' HANSON

Enlisted in the Marine Corps, November 1968.  Attended 1 year of school in San Diego for Radio repair.  Served in the 2nd Marine Air Wing for two years as an Air Traffic Control Tower radio repairman.  Stationed in Cherry Point, NC, Iwakuni, Japan, and Subic Bay, Philippines until being Honorably discharged in Treasure Island, CA in November of 1971.  He has been a member of the American Legion Post since 1972.

DUANE 'DEWEY'  HUNGERHOLT

Dec 4, 1933 –

 

 

Volunteered for the Army in February 1954, took basic training at Ft Leonard Wood, MO and went to Ft Riley, KS to cook school, after which he returned to Ft Leonard Wood.  He served as a cook another 2 years.  Discharged from the Army in 1956.  Is an active member of American Legion Post 40.

Graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1970 and received his commission as a 2d Lt from the Army ROTC program. Served with the 4/64 Armor/3d Infantry Division in Germany from 1971 - 1974.

Drafted August 28, 1969 in the Army and served with the 1st Logistics Command where he served in Qui Nhon, Viet Nam.  He received the NSDM, VSM, VCM and numerous medals, badges, campaign ribbons.  Discharged April 3, 1971.

Enlisted in the US Air Force on December 1, 1953 with an aviation cadet assignment.  Served some twenty years in areas including the Middle East, Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe.  He flew the T-29, B-47, T-34, T-33, T-37, T-39, C-123, AND C-130.  Retired April 1, 1974.  Very active in local activities and the American Legion.

Joined the Air Force on January 4, 1974 and was as assistant crew chief on a C-130.  He served in Okinawa with the 18th OMS, served in Abilene, TX with the 463d OMs, and was TDY twice in Europe.  Discharged September 17, 1977.

Served in the USAF with the Security Service as a Morse Code Interceptor fro March 1973 to March 1977.  He served in San Antonio, TX, Biloxi, MS, and Misawa, Japan.

JERRY HAUGEN

Oct 17, 1947 -

 

 

Entered the Air Force October 10, 1965.  He had basic training and tech school for law and military police at Lakeland AFB, San Antonio, Texas.  He had TDY in Michigan, and then served in Viet Nam from November 1966 until November 1967.  He served several locations there and was awarded the DSM.  He then went to High Wycombe AFB in England until October 1969.

Served in the US Navy from 1964 to 1968 and toured the Mediterranean on the aircraft carrier the USS American CVA 66 during the Vietnam War.

Feb 14, 1944 – Dec 9, 2006

 

 

 

He served in the Army for two years and in the Air Force for 25 years.  Discharged as a master sergeant, he served in Vietnam and was a flight engineer. Buried in Lanesboro Cemetery.

Drafted into the US Army in 1965.  Stationed in Viet Nam 1966 - 1967.  Recipient of 2 purple hearts.  Received an Honorable discharge in 1967.

Drafted into the Army as a Private in the Infantry in November 1965. Graduated from Infantry Officers Candidate School as a 2nd Lt in 1967. Served in Vietnam 1967 - 1968 as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander in the First Air Cavalry Division. Had subsequent commands at the Company, Battalion, and Brigade level. Awarded several medals and commendations. Served as a helicopter pilot and staff officer in the Pentagon. Retired at the rank of Colonel from the US Army 1991

Enlisted in the US Army in 1957. Honorably discharged from the Army in 1963. He was originally a member of the Pine Island American Legion and transferred to the Lanesboro American Legion in 1994. He is presently the Gambling Manager of Post # 40.

Entered the US Navy in 1985. Served as an Air Traffic Controller aboard the USS Iwo Jima and at the Naval Air Station at Norfolk, VA. Was discharged in 1991.

Enlisted in the US Air Force in 1986 as an Aircraft Mechanic (Crew Chief) on AC 130 H/U Gunships assigned to 1st Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, FL. Deployed to Panama during Operation Just Cause, Desert Shield/Strom, Operation Deny Flight Bosnia/Kosovo, (5 tours) United Nations Operations Mombasa Kenya, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). Participated in numerous NATO exercises in Germany, Denmark and Mali Africa. Received several Commendation and Service Medals. Retired in 2007 as a MSgt (E7)

  1948 –

 

 

Entered the US Army in 1968. Received the Bronze Star, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, and National Defense Medal. Was discharged in 1970.

Served in the US Navy from 1972 - 1976, stationed in the Philippines and aboard the USS Cleveland.  Served in the Minnesota Army National Guard from 1977 until 2000 retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel
