WORLD WAR I

1914 1918

Also known as the Great War, the conflict was chiefly in Europe, among most of the great Western powers.

Remembering those who fought in the "War to End All Wars“

Construction of the memorial began in the spring of 1931. Dedicated by President Herbert Hoover on November 11, 1931 (Armistice Day), the day that marked the official end of the war.

Preserved in the cornerstone is a list of 26,000 Washingtonians who served in the Great War. Inscribed on the base are the names of the 499 District of Columbia citizens who lost their lives in the war, together with medallions representing the branches of the armed forces.

Freedom Honor Flight

Freedom Honor Flight of La Crosse, WI now  serves Rochester, Minnesota area veterans.  Freedom Honor Flight provides this trip free to veterans as a tribute for their service.  A trip which is beyond the reach of many veterans due to cost and physical limitations. World War II, Korea and veterans with a terminal illness have priority status for this year’s flights.

Contact James Haugen at 507-273-0366 haugfour@gmail.com for applications, upcoming dates, and to answer any questions.
